Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway may be completed by June this year

Wang Wentian, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Cambodia, said that if the process goes smoothly as planned, the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway project could be completed in June 2022.

He made the remarks at a handover ceremony of 231 cases of Covid-19 traditional Chinese medicine weighing 1,125 kilograms to Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong, co-chair of the Cambodia-China Intergovernmental Coordinating Committee yesterday.

Ambassador Wang stated, “We are also pleased to inform that the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway is running smoothly and could be completed very much earlier than scheduled by June this year.

The Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway Construction Project is being constructed by PPSHV Expressway Co., Ltd, a subsidiary investment company of China Road Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and technically supervised by MINCONSULT SDN. BHD. It is being constructed at a cost exceeding $2 billion and work started in 2019.

The expressway passes through Kampong Speu for a total of 80.8 km, Koh Kong, 1.92 km and Sihanoukville, 89.89 km. The Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway Project is the first expressway project and the most important strategic corridor project in Cambodia, reducing the travel time from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville Seaport by at least half.

The Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway is currently is about 80 percent complete. This was stated by Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport, on the morning of January 27, 2022, on the occasion of presiding over the opening ceremony of the meeting to review the achievements of public works and transportation in 2021 and the work direction for 2022.

” The Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway has a total length of 187.05 km, reaching 80%, which is originally scheduled to be completed in September 2022,” he said. The project is being under-taken on a Build-Operate-Transfer-(BOT) basis.
